Lovingkindness within Endurance
Tuesday evening May 14 and Wednesday May 15
“ . . . but not a dog shall snarl at any of the Israelites, at man or beast—in order that you may know that the Adonai makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.” Ex. 11:7
Amira is shaped like a greyhound but her ears are long and fluffy.
She’s the color of sand and her eyes are bronze.
Running toward me she looks like the light at is shifts on the desert rocks, poetry in motion, right up until she pulls up in front of me and does her goofy whole-body-wag.
Amira was curled up by the fire with her puppies in the house next to Miriam’s when the Angel of Death passed by. She made no sound of warning, but she also didn’t sleep that night. There was no danger to her home, but her heart broke for the families of the other dogs, the Egyptian families. Today she’s come with two of her saluki young, of course now fully grown, one almost cream and the other tan and brown. The puppies didn’t make any noise that night, either.
Bending to rub her cotton-candy-soft ears I fully pause and get down on my knees asking to give Amira a hug and she lets me. The other two dogs wait their turns and then come in close.
It wasn’t only humans who made the first journey out of Egypt, and it’s not only humans with us now.
I can’t think of any lovingkindness in the world more enduring than a dog’s.
See you at Sinai.
