Tu BiShvat (literally the 15th of the month of Shvat) marked an important date for Jewish farmers in ancient times. In the Middle Ages, Jewish mystics - kabbalists - deepened the spiritual significance of Tu BiShvat with new religious rituals. According to Rabbi Isaac Luria, all physical forms hide within them a spark of Divine Presence. In Jewish mysticism, human actions can release these sparks. On Tu BiShvat, the kabbalists would eat certain fruits associated with the Land of Israel as a symbolic way of releasing these divine sparks.
Today, Tu BiShvat is a time to explore our connection with all of creation and nature, with the land of the Land of our ancestors and the of the Jewish people, with our sensitivity to and awareness of our environment, and with our relationship in particular with trees. For environmentalists, Tu BiShvat is an ancient Jewish 'Earth Day' that educates us about our tradition's advocacy for responsible stewardship.
Tu BiShvat is also an invitation to begin again.
We have four new years on our calendar, Rosh HaShanah (the world's birthday/new year for seasons) , Tu Bishvat (the new year for trees), the first of Nisan (the anniversary of our becoming a People), and the first of Elul (the new year for animals). This season is another invitation to reflect and recenter.
Together, guided by the themes and teachings of Tu BiShvat, we will learn, reflect, journal, and enjoy one another's company. We will engage in conversations and discussion, but you will never be asked to share anything you've journaled with the group. Those reflections are just for you.
I’d love to see you there!
